ITS WEDNESDAY! What have I got in store for you today? Gritty, beautifully illustrated, pulpy, film noir inspired hardboiled stories! Not for the faint of heart.
BLACKSAD: a 3 Eisner Award nominated book, was originated from spanish creators Juan Diaz Canales (w) and Juanjo Guarnido (a), and was aimed more towards the French audience. Originally printed in French (then Spanish) by Dargud it has since been republished in English (and several other languages) by Dark Horse Comics (someone pointed out to me last week that it is indeed orderable in Previews if your shop doesn’t already carry a copy!)
John Blacksad is a hardboiled PI detective in a world of anthropromophic creatures! He is a sleek black cat who gets in deep and dangerous within the 1950’s story set, portrayed by clean lines, daring, lucious watercolor portraits, and enviornments bound to leave you breathless!
The 4 gritty (when I say gritty I MEAN GRITTY) story volumes about murder, racial segrigation, a New Orleans murder mystery, along with love and betrayal, are bound in gorgeous oversized hardcover which makes this a must have for any sequential art fanatic. Retails for 29.99, its all sorts of perfect! The book itself has a nice weight (187 pages) and a matte/select gloss cover.
This sequential is absolutley gorgeous, and It is one of the most valuable sources of inspiration in technique that I personally own!
So if you have a loved one who lives on the cusp of society, digs the nitty gritty, or wants some disney with a bit of blood and violence, gift this! I promise you won’t be upset. Don’t forget to read it yourself first! You might need to buy a second copy! ;)
